We had to adjust the mechanical latches and the sealing because this was the first time we coupled an SSX to a Q Fortis MS. Thanks to Kseniya Dryahina, Patrik Španěl, Radim from Pragolab s.r.o., and the team at the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry CAS, this was completed in one day, and we were happily acquiring breath and headspace data on the second day :)

An emitter can be made out of plastic, metal, silica, several of them combined.. or even paper! Choosing the right type may be crucial for achieving optimal performance of the detection system.

It is time to walk the path towards full automation, and manufacturing smart devices. The new guys will help us get there quicker and better.

Identifying the best capillary size

The electrospray (ES) emitter is an essential part of a high-res mass spectrometry system. The quality of the data is linked to a reliable ES. Despite its central importance, this little piece of equipment isn’t well known.

This work from the Ohio State University shows the potential of the platform SUPER SESI (by Fossiliontech) - Orbitrap (by Thermo Fisher Scientific) on differentiating cancer types and monitoring their treatment.

Electrospray provides the best performance, but obtaining a stable signal can be tricky.
The new SUPER SESI-X, designed for the Thermo Orbitrap Exploris series, is fully automatic and is ready to incorporate intelligent control. This source will auto-pilot the electrospray to bring high performance and reliability.

We have developed this first pilot unit within the PERFECT LIFE project (funded by the European Union). It comprises a gas conditioning unit, a desorber, the Super SESI, the MS, and of course, the cartridges!

Jiayi Lan and Giorgia Greter from ETH Zürich and Zurich Exhalomics are investigating whether using Super SESI to measure air around experimental animals can be a completely non-invasive way of monitoring the influence of the gut microbiome on host metabolism. We are looking forward to seeing their results!
