We make gadgets to decipher the molecular structure of life.
Hi, I’m Guillermo.
I’m an aerospace engineer by training, but I’ve spent most of my career at the intersection of fluid mechanics, analytical chemistry, and instrumentation design. My first contact with electrospray was through satellite propulsion—but it didn’t take long to realize that ions could be much more than just propellant.
After a PhD with J. F. de la Mora (Yale) and a postdoc with R. Zenobi (ETH Zurich), I started Fossiliontech with a bold idea: to bring high-sensitivity detection to oil exploration by identifying molecular fossils in drilling fluids. (That’s where the “fossil ion” name comes from.) The science was sound—but we couldn’t secure the funds.
So we pivoted to a problem I knew inside out: electrospray ionization delivers unmatched performance, but producing stable nano-electrospray in real research workflows is notoriously fragile.
That challenge led to FIT’s core principle: make ionization dependable, and to our first product: Super SESI.
Since then, we’ve expanded the portfolio with application-enabling tools and high-performance nano-ESI emitters, now used in volatilomics and proteomics labs across Europe and the US.
Fossiliontech exists to make electrospray practical, modular, stable, and dependable. We focus on what matters: data quality, clean spectra, reliable operation, and tools that do their job without getting in your way.
GUILLERMO VIDAL: Tech-founder & CEO. PhD in Fluid Mechanics and Analytical Instrumentation (under J. F. de la Mora) and Aerospace engineer. More than 12 patents in SESI, IMS, and MS. Worked for the Eurofighter program before joining de la Mora’s group in 2008 (Mech. Engineering at Yale U., USA). There, he was introduced to electrospray and ion analysis instrumentation. GV was Head of the R&D team at SEADM, and worked in close collaboration with Thermo Fisher’s R&D team on the development of IMS-MS. In 2014, he joined the Org. Chem. Department at ETH-Z to lead the engineering leg of a multidisciplinary effort involving engineers, analytical chemists, and medical doctors to identify breath biomarkers. This was the seed of SUPER SESI. GV is a co-founder of www.dbi.ch, and the founder of www.proteomicshop.com and www.fossiliontech.com
